Identify suitable land

We begin by assessing your land, ideally up to 25 acres, flat or gently-sloped and unshaded, to confirm suitability for a sub-5MW solar project. We assess planning constraints such as AONB, SSSI, heritage settings, flood zones, and access, along with proximity to an 11 kV or 33 kV grid connection. Our preference is to use whole fields, keeping the

land tidy, accessible, and available for grazing. We undertake a feasibility study to assess the potential of the grid and the land to establish a project plan and commercial proposal.

Secure planning & grid connection

Secure planning & grid connection

Secure planning & grid connection

Our in-house team prepares and submits the G99 grid application to the local Distribution Network Operator (DNO) to secure capacity and a point-of-connection. If this is successful, we will then proceed to secure land rights and progress the planning application. We will commission environmental and technical reports covering ecology, transport, glint and glare, and Biodiversity Net Gain at no cost to the landowner. National Planning Policy gives significant weight to the benefits of renewable energy, and grid reforms moving to a 'first ready, first connected' model, well-prepared sub-5MW schemes can now move faster and with lower risk.

Ready to build delivery

Once planning and grid are secured, we push the project forward through detailed design engineering, pre-construction surveys onto financial close and construction. A 5MW project can be completed in as little as four to six months, from piling, frames, panels, and inverters through to the grid connection. Commissioning is completed under G99 witness testing with the DNO before energisation. Landscaping and biodiversity measures are delivered in parallel, leaving the site ready to generate income and deliver wider environmental benefits for decades.

Once planning and grid are secured, we agree a long-term lease and move to construction. A 5MW project typically builds out in four to six months, from piling, frames, panels, and inverters through to the private cable connection. Secure planning & grid connection

Our in-house team prepares and submits the planning application alongside the G99 grid application to the local DNO. This includes environmental and technical reports covering ecology, transport, glint and glare, and Biodiversity Net Gain. With the 2024 NPPF updates prioritising renewable energy, and grid reforms moving to a 'first ready, first connected' model, well-prepared sub-5MW schemes now move faster and with lower risk.

Process timeline

Step 1

8 weeks

Feasibility & Grid Connection Application

We assess whether your farmland can host a 5MW scheme, considering irradiation levels, topography, planning

designations, flood risk, access, and proximity to grid. If viable, we agree an initial Heads of Terms to allow us to submit a grid application – the DNO has up to 90 days to respond.

Step 2

3-6 Months

Planning & Securing Grid

Once we have received our connection offer, we can assess the exact project requirements to optimise the development and progress through planning. Our reports will typically cover ecology, landscape, heritage, drainage, transport, glint and glare, and Biodiversity Net Gain. We will then accept the grid connection offer and proceed to secure land rights via an

Option to Lease agreement, and proceed to planning.

Step 3

6-18 months

Planning Consent and Construction

Once planning consent is achieved, we will assess the full pre-construction requirements and design engineering required to commence construction, including detailed project programme giving you comfort of the delivery timeline and when we would look to enter into the lease.
